Averaging about 15 feet in width, Black Creek has good water quality and a bottom of gravel with some rubble. It is surrounded by pastureland and woodland, and most sections have a significant amount of alder bank cover. The headwaters flow through the Keaney Swamp Wildlife Management Area.

This stream is fishable all trout season. In addition to trout, there are several large, old beaver impoundments along the middle and upper reaches that are reported to hold modest-sized largemouth bass and panfish.

In March and April, Black Creek is stocked with a total of 1,300 brown trout yearlings in the 3-mile section between the bridge crossings on County Road 16, which is labelled Route 408 on some older maps.
