Identifying Characteristics
|
|
Body is dark green to brown, grading to yellow or orange on breast.
Dark blue to almost black gill flap.
Dark blotch on the back of the dorsal fin.
Irregular vertical dark bars on sides.

Habits and Habitat
|
|
Prefers quiet, weedy waters, similar to pumpkinseed, but tends more towards open areas.
Often holds close to shore, hiding under docks and among vegetation, or along weed edges.

Tackle and Techniques
|
|
Use ultra-light spinning or fly-fishing tackle.
Small spinners and jigs work well, but natural baits such as small worms are the most
productive.
Provides good fishing for children in the summer.
