Identifying Characteristics
|
|
Body is dark olive with black mottling.
Eyes are red.
Faint horizontal lines on sides, particularly towards belly.
Dark spot on gill flap, often edged with white.
5 to 7 rays in the anal fin.

Habits and Habitat
|
|
Frequents deep, rocky streams and cool, clear lakes.
Often found in same areas as smallmouth bass.
Abundant in many areas; if you get one, you can get a stringer full.
Scrappy fighters.

Tackle and Techniques
|
|
Use ultra-light spinning tackle and 4- to 6-pound-test line.
Will take flies, small spinners, and live bait.
Fish around old pilings and along rocky shorelines.
